Dyson Hot+Cool AM09 Review

Dyson Hot+Cool AM09 review covering heating and cooling performance, noise, running costs and whether this bladeless fan heater is worth £400 in 2026.

By Updated 21 June 2026 4.5 Independently tested

The Dyson Hot+Cool AM09 is worth buying if you want one appliance for both summer cooling and winter heating, and dislike owning seasonal clutter. It suits people who will genuinely use it year-round, particularly in a home office or bedroom. The key strength is its precise thermostat in heat mode; the caveat is a £400 price and higher running costs whenever the heater is active.

Design and build quality

The AM09 shares the AM07’s design language: bladeless oval loop, weighted base, magnetic remote. In person the two are almost indistinguishable unless you look closely at the slightly wider body of the AM09, which accommodates the heating element. Both colourways are understated and suit most room styles.

The build feels appropriately premium. Controls are the same minimal arrangement: power, airflow, oscillation, a timer and a temperature target dial accessed via the remote. The thermostat function is the key addition here. You set a target temperature and the AM09 heats or fans to maintain it, then cuts power when the room reaches that level. It is a sensible, hotel-room style of comfort control.

Airflow and cooling

In fan mode the AM09 performs identically to the AM07. The same smooth, even airstream, the same ten speed settings, the same 70-degree oscillation. If all you ever used it for was cooling, you would notice no difference. The Air Multiplier technology produces a steady laminar flow that is comfortable to sit in, without the gust-and-surge sensation of some bladed fans.

For a room up to around 20-25 square metres, the AM09 covers the space well on oscillation. On higher speeds it has plenty of reach, and the evenness of the airflow means you do not need to point it directly at yourself for it to be effective.

Noise

In cooling mode the AM09 is very close to the AM07: the lower half of its speed range produces a smooth, broadband rush with no mechanical rattle or blade chop. Switching to heating mode introduces a perceptibly higher motor note, because the element requires stronger airflow to distribute warmth safely. It remains quieter than most conventional bar or coil fan heaters, but it is not a first choice for light sleepers in a winter bedroom. For daytime heating of a living room or home office, the noise level is entirely acceptable.

Running costs

Fan mode draws around 40W, which works out to roughly 1p an hour at the Ofgem price cap of roughly 24-25p per kWh. Heating mode is a different matter: the AM09 draws up to 2,000W at full power, costing around 50p an hour. The saving grace is the thermostat. Once the room reaches your target temperature, the heater cuts off and only the fan continues at around 40W. In a well-insulated room the heating element may be active for only 15-30 minutes per hour, which cuts the real-world running cost substantially below the headline figure.

Features

Beyond the thermostat, the AM09 adds a Jet Focus control that switches between a concentrated personal beam and a wider diffused mode for room heating. The remote handles both modes and all temperature settings. There is no app, no voice control and no air quality monitoring. As with the AM07, Dyson keeps the experience deliberately simple.

The sleep timer steps the fan down gradually before switching off, useful in both summer and winter. The display dims automatically in the dark.

Is the Dyson Hot+Cool AM09 worth it?

If you genuinely use it year-round, yes. The AM09 effectively replaces a separate tower fan and a separate portable heater, both of which would cost money and take up storage. The thermostat makes it more economical than a basic fan heater in practice.

If you only want summer cooling, the Dyson AM07 is the better choice at £100 less and loses nothing relevant. If your priority is quiet heating without the Dyson price, a conventional bladed tower fan plus a thermostat oil radiator is cheaper and arguably more effective at overnight heating.

Pros

  • Works as both a fan and a heater year-round
  • Precise thermostat maintains your chosen temperature
  • Bladeless design is safe and straightforward to clean
  • Jet Focus control switches between personal and room modes
  • Remote control stores magnetically on the unit

Cons

  • Higher price than a dedicated fan or heater separately
  • Slightly noisier than the cooling-only AM07
  • Heater mode draws significant power, as all fan heaters do

Frequently asked questions

Can the Dyson Hot+Cool AM09 replace a central heating radiator?
Not for whole-house heating, but it is effective for keeping a single room comfortable. The thermostat shuts the heater off once your target temperature is reached, which makes it more efficient than a fan heater that runs continuously. Think of it as a smart top-up heater, not a boiler replacement.
Is the Dyson AM09 much louder than the AM07?
Slightly. In cooling mode the AM09 is broadly similar to the AM07, though experienced listeners notice a marginal difference. In heating mode it is louder because the heating element requires higher airflow to distribute heat safely. It remains quieter than most conventional fan heaters.
How much does the Dyson Hot+Cool cost to run as a heater?
In heating mode it draws up to around 2,000W, similar to a standard electric fan heater. At current UK energy prices that is roughly 50-55p per hour at full power. The thermostat helps by cutting the heater once the room reaches your set temperature, which reduces actual running time considerably.
Does the Dyson Hot+Cool work in summer too?
Yes. In fan mode it behaves exactly like the AM07 cooling fan: 10 speeds, oscillation and a smooth bladeless airstream. The heating element is inactive. It is genuinely two appliances in one, which is the core argument for the higher price.
